With Recalibrate your senses!, Neuhaus and the students of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at the KABK (the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague) hosted a small-scale unifying dining experience where the guests were invited to actually ‘recalibrate their senses.’ This gathering was the first in a series of collaborative explorations that will culminate in Het Nieuwe Instituut’s temporary transformation into Neuhaus, an ‘institute’ for other, ‘more than human’ knowledge, starting in the Spring of 2019.
Neuhaus departs from the premise that we have to update the current systems of knowledge production. We have become accustomed to a society that is strictly geared to ratio, measurability and productivity. And although we are confronted with the negative consequences of this logic on a daily basis, we still struggle to free ourselves from its constraints. Can you even imagine a kind of knowledge that appeals to all of your senses, beyond the limitations of reason? Can you envision how sensory experiences, extraordinary social interactions and playful rituals could provide such other knowledge?
