The House of Being in collaboration with Neuhaus is proud to present the School for the Apocalypse. This year as a part of the celebration of the 100 years’ anniversary of the Bauhaus; a codification of ‘the modern’ in a pedagogy that could produce the new world, the School for the Apocalypse will explore what the curriculum for a post-human living and design would be in our current era.

The soundwalk invites you to explore the (bio) diversity and complexity of The New Garden through the sensorial; to engage with The New Garden through the body as a space to connect to the feminine qualities of receptivity and coexistence to access other, more-than-human, possibilities of knowing and being. With an introduction and Q&A with Annika Kappner.

In this workshop led by De Vroede Vrouw (The Midwife), you will learn about the ancient art of dowsing or water divination. The workshop is part of the Water Matter programme, curated by Rianne Makkink (WaterSchool), which explores the knowledge contained in water within the context of Neuhaus, Academy for more-than-human knowledge.

Under the Same Sun :: A Collective Blueprint invites participants to collectively investigate how sunlight informs our environment in space and time.

In this performance as part of Neuhaus, architect, composer and jazz pianist Murat Ali Cengiz turns a trusted Bauhaus method on its head: whereas in his years at Dessau Wassily Kandinsky used musical notation and scores as an inspiration and tool in his design classes, a hundred years later Cengiz is guided by design in writing and presenting an improvised composition.

Wendelien van Oldenborgh presents her film Two Stones for its Rotterdam premiere, after its screening this spring in bauhaus imaginista at Berlin's Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The artist speaks with cultural historian Hanneke Oosterhof, who features in the film, and who recently published a biography of the architect and Rotterdam city planner Lotte Stam-Beese - a recurring figure in Van Oldenborgh's work. The conversation is led by Saskia van Stein, curator and director of Bureau Europa, a platform for architecture and design.

According to some theories, life on earth originated in a so-called primordial soup. During a performance, Gerjan Piksen allows participants to experience this primordial soup in three steps: an introduction, followed by a guided meditation and, finally, a noise composition. The sound piece allows participants to have a sensory experience of the primordial soup.

Bauhaus Lessons highlights the work of teachers and students at the Bauhaus and educational institutions inspired by the German school. Bauhaus Lessons draws upon materials by Bauhaus students - or Bauhäusler– such as Lotte Stam-Beese and teachers such as Mart Stam and Johan Niegeman from the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut.  

The Amenti Gathering offers community, connection, exchange, wisdom and love, all of which help us to better understand, broaden and deepen ourselves and the world. Our planet faces a huge existential threat, caused by human actions capitalising on nature. In science and humanities - until very recently - we perceived nature as a resource rather than a partner. Furthermore, especially in big cities we are extremely dissociated from natural world. Kasia Molga and Erik Overmeire of World Wilder Lab believe that no effort is too big or too small to change this and that storytelling (in various forms) is one of the most powerful ways to reconnect with the living world.

In this second workshop of the zoöp research facility the participants work out the concept for an instrument that will be able to indicate the ecological development of a zoöp.

Learn to listen deeply. In this guided workshop participants learn to listen in a deeply concentrated way and to experience sonic resonance.

During the workshop with artist duo Arvid&Marie, citizens learn about the debate of machine rights, its importance and its critics. With a hands on legal and performative approach, participants will draft complaints and defences towards a design for the Universal Declaration of Rights for Machines.

As part of Het Nieuwe Instituut’s research on burn-out and exhausted bodies, this series investigates how voice, oral histories, and collective, embodied listening, could be deployed as a counterbalance of the pervasiveness of the image and the growing pressure to put bodies on display. For this first event, Professor of anthropology Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing read, by means of an audio piece, her work The Mushroom at the End of the World.

How does the Bauhaus functionalistic credo live on in architecture, and how does architecture relate to the human dimension? These questions invite different cinematographic approaches from contemporary artists.

100 years ago 'Staatliche Bauhaus' was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. From Germany, this art academy grew into one of the most influential worldwide architectural and design movements of the 20th century. On the occasion of Bauhaus' jubilee, Germany Travel has developed a TINY [BAU]HAUS together with DUS Architects as a sample of the impressive Bauhaus heritage in Germany.

Reading Matter explores the relationship between design and matter from ecological, historical and sensory perspectives. What underpins the cultural difference between matter and material? And what are the possibilities for the non-exploitative forms of existence in the material world?

To celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Bauhaus in 1919, Hetty Berens, curator of Sonneveld House, will give a lecture about the relationship between the Bauhaus and Sonneveld House during the 2019 Art Rotterdam Week.
