It has long been thought that only people use symbolic signs to communicate, but it is now clear that animals, insects and plants do the same. All bodies, including those of humans, also use chemical, physical and material signals. In order to be able to cooperate with other species, we need to understand the way in which other-than-human beings communicate. This may enable us to make connections and prevent human language alone from determining how we understand other beings.
More-than-human Languages in the Neuhaus Curriculum
Activities in the context of this learning trail
Individual routes have been mapped out through the rooms spaces? and the Neuhaus programme based on a number of overarching themes. The ‘learning trails’ enable participants to discover how the chosen subject manifests itself in different ways in different programmes, and how it connects with other learning trails.
Malware - Symptoms of Viral Infection
Computer viruses steal, damage and threaten our most sensitive information, files and privacy. Nevertheless in a strange way, the virus also has an exciting, even ‘beautiful’, quality. The exhibition Malware, curated by Bas van de Poel and Marina Otero Verzier, focusses on the most infamous examples. These form the starting point for an exploration of questions of security, warfare and geopolitics in times of rapid technological advance.
